Why Choose Us

Why Hamilton trusts us with car & hybrid battery services

  • Tested before replaced

We test the battery and the charging system on calibrated equipment before quoting. A new battery in a car with a charging fault just fails again.

  • Hybrid battery specialists

We test the high-voltage hybrid pack for cell balance and fault codes before condemning it, then fit the correct battery for your Toyota, Honda or Lexus hybrid.

  • Charging-system diagnosis

A battery that keeps going flat is often a symptom. We check alternator output, voltage drop and parasitic draw so the real cause is found.

  • Right battery, right fitment

Conventional, AGM and EFB start-stop batteries are not interchangeable. We fit the correct type and capacity and register it where the car needs it.

  • Honest answers

If your battery has life left, we will tell you. If the alternator or a parasitic draw is the real fault, we find it rather than selling you a battery.

  • MTA workshop, twenty-plus years

An MTA member workshop on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, with over twenty years diagnosing 12V and hybrid battery faults across the Waikato.

How It Works

Simple, transparent process

  1. 01

    Symptoms and scan

We log your symptoms, scan the vehicle with a manufacturer-level tool where needed, and read live data, voltage and CCA on the 12V, or state of health and cell balance on a hybrid pack.

  2. 02

    Test under load

The 12V battery is tested on a calibrated analyser under load, and the alternator, starter draw and any parasitic draw are checked.

  3. 03

    Quote the right repair

We explain what is actually failing, a tired 12V battery, a charging-system fault, a parasitic draw, or a worn hybrid pack, and quote in writing before any work goes ahead.

  4. 04

    Fit and verify

Battery fitted, terminals cleaned, BMS registered or hybrid codes cleared where required, then a charging or balance check confirms the system is back to manufacturer behaviour.

Everything you should know about car & hybrid battery services

A workshop perspective on what's involved, how we run the job, and what shapes the final cost.

Why battery work in Hamilton belongs in a proper workshop

The 12V battery looks like the simplest part of the car, and that is exactly why it gets the laziest treatment. A battery shop reads voltage on a battery that has just been driven, calls it fine, and sends you off, or sells you a new one without ever asking why the old one died. Both miss the point.

A flat battery is often a symptom of a charging-system fault or a parasitic draw, and a slow crank can be the starter motor rather than the battery. Diagnose the wrong part and you have either replaced a healthy battery or fitted a new one straight into a fault that will flatten it within weeks. The cars that come to us most often are ones that have already been through one or two batteries with the underlying cause never found.

Hybrid batteries get the same lazy treatment from the other direction: a single fault code and the whole pack is condemned, when the real story might be one weak module or a cooling fan choked with dust. We test before we condemn, on both the 12V and the high-voltage side, so you spend money on the fault the car actually has.

What our car and hybrid battery work covers

12V starter-battery work covers every vehicle type: conventional flooded lead-acid, AGM (absorbed glass mat), and EFB (enhanced flooded battery) types used on start-stop systems. We test on calibrated analysers that read state of health, cold-cranking amps and voltage under load, not a quick voltmeter check on a battery that has just been driven.

Charging-system testing covers:

  • Alternator output and voltage drop across the main cables
  • Drive belt and tensioner condition
  • Parasitic draw on vehicles that go flat overnight
  • Starter motor draw, to isolate whether a slow crank is the battery or the starter itself

New 12V batteries are fitted to the correct type and capacity, terminals and earth straps cleaned and checked, and the battery registered to the BMS where start-stop vehicles require it. The old battery is recycled through a licensed channel.

Hybrid drive batteries: the high-voltage pack in a hybrid is tested for state of health, individual module voltages and cell balance, and scanned for fault codes, before any replacement is recommended. We replace hybrid batteries on the common Toyota, Honda and Lexus hybrids, fit the correct pack for your model, clear the fault codes, and confirm the system is charging and balancing correctly before the car goes back to you. Where a pack has failed, we quote the replacement in writing and explain exactly what is involved first.

We also handle auxiliary and dual-battery setups on utes, vans and campers, checking both batteries, the isolator or DC-DC charger that links them, and the wiring between them. Pre-purchase battery and charging-system checks are available as a clear written summary.

Hybrid battery replacement by model

Hybrid battery replacement is not one job, it changes with the pack, the platform and the mileage. Below is what replacement involves on the hybrids we see most in the Waikato, with typical New Zealand market ranges for a replacement pack fitted. These ranges are a guide to the wider NZ market, not a quote from our workshop, and the exact price depends on your vehicle, the pack, and whether a new or refurbished battery is used.

Toyota Aqua: the Aqua is New Zealand's ride-share and commuter workhorse, and its nickel-metal hydride pack does hard, stop-start city kilometres that wear it faster than a private car. Replacement means removing the pack from behind the rear seat, fitting a healthy battery, and clearing the hybrid fault codes so the system balances correctly. Across New Zealand, an Aqua hybrid battery replacement typically costs between $1,500 and $2,600 fitted.

Toyota Prius: the Prius pioneered the mainstream hybrid and its packs vary by generation, so the first step is identifying exactly which battery your car takes. Replacement involves swapping the pack, resetting the battery ECU, and confirming the cooling fan and airflow are clear, because heat is what kills these batteries. Across New Zealand, a Prius hybrid battery replacement typically runs between $1,800 and $3,200 fitted.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid: the Corolla hybrid uses a compact, efficient pack, and replacement is a clean job once the correct battery for the model year is matched. We scan the pack first, because a single weak module can trip a warning without the whole battery being dead. Across New Zealand, a Corolla hybrid battery replacement typically costs between $2,000 and $3,500 fitted.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: the RAV4 carries a larger pack to move a heavier vehicle, so both the battery and the labour to access it sit at the higher end. Replacement includes fitting the correct high-capacity pack and confirming the cooling system that keeps it alive is working. Across New Zealand, a RAV4 hybrid battery replacement typically costs between $2,500 and $4,500 fitted.

Honda Fit and Jazz Hybrid: Honda's IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) hybrids use a different system to Toyota, and their packs have their own failure pattern as the car ages. Replacement means fitting the correct IMA battery and clearing the IMA and check-engine warnings a tired pack sets off. Across New Zealand, a Honda hybrid battery replacement typically costs between $1,500 and $2,800 fitted.

Lexus hybrids: Lexus models like the CT200h, IS and RX share Toyota hybrid technology but use their own packs and, on the larger SUVs, higher-capacity batteries. Replacement follows the same process, test, fit the correct pack, clear the codes and verify balancing, with the bigger models sitting at the top of the range. Across New Zealand, a Lexus hybrid battery replacement typically costs between $2,500 and $5,000 fitted.

At a glance, typical New Zealand market ranges for a replacement hybrid pack fitted:

Hybrid model Typical NZ market range (fitted)
Toyota Aqua $1,500 to $2,600
Toyota Prius $1,800 to $3,200
Toyota Corolla Hybrid $2,000 to $3,500
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid $2,500 to $4,500
Honda Fit / Jazz Hybrid $1,500 to $2,800
Lexus (CT200h, IS, RX) $2,500 to $5,000

How a battery job works at our Frankton workshop

You phone (07) 847 3339 with the symptoms: a slow crank, a battery that keeps going flat, a charge warning light, a no-start after a week parked up, or a hybrid warning triangle and a drop in fuel economy. We book a diagnostic slot, usually around an hour.

On the day, a 12V battery is tested first on the calibrated analyser under load, then the charging system is checked: alternator output, voltage drop, drive belt condition, and a parasitic-draw test where the car has been going flat while parked. If the slow crank could be the starter, a starter draw test settles it. On a hybrid, we scan the drive battery for state of health, module voltages and cell balance so we can see whether the whole pack or a single module is at fault.

You get a clear explanation of what is actually faulty before any work is approved, and a written quote where parts are needed. Once authorised, the battery is fitted, terminals and earth straps are cleaned, the BMS is registered or the hybrid codes cleared where the car requires it, and a final charging or balance check confirms the system is back to manufacturer specification before you collect.

What car and hybrid battery replacement costs in New Zealand

We quote every battery job specifically, and we never publish our own prices, because the right number depends on your vehicle and what the test actually finds. What we can do is set expectations against the wider market.

Across New Zealand, a replacement 12V car battery typically costs between $150 and $500 fitted, though the exact price depends on your vehicle and the extent of the work. Conventional lead-acid sits at the lower end, while AGM and EFB start-stop batteries cost more, and vehicles that need the battery registered to the BMS add a small labour step. Hybrid battery replacement sits in a different bracket again, from around $1,500 on a Toyota Aqua up past $5,000 on a large Lexus, as set out in the model section above. These are New Zealand market ranges, not our quote.

The factors that move any battery job are:

  • Battery type - conventional lead-acid is the lowest cost; AGM and EFB start-stop batteries are more; vehicles requiring BMS registration add a small labour step
  • Battery capacity and size - a small hatchback and a large diesel ute are different supply costs
  • Charging-system faults - diagnosed and quoted separately; an alternator, drive belt or parasitic draw each carry their own labour
  • Hybrid pack condition - whether the whole pack needs replacing or a single failing module is dragging it down changes the job entirely
  • Diagnostic time - a straightforward flat battery is quick; an intermittent parasitic draw can take time to trace

Hamilton and Waikato coverage

Our workshop is on Kahikatea Drive in Frankton, easy to reach from Hillcrest, Rototuna, Te Rapa, Chartwell and Glenview, and three minutes from the Hamilton ring road.

Battery customers come from across the Waikato: commuters from Cambridge and Te Awamutu, ute and van owners from Morrinsville and Huntly, and families from Ngaruawahia and out to Raglan. We replace hybrid batteries for Aqua and Prius owners right across the city, including the ride-share and commuter cars that rack up city kilometres fast, and short-trip commute cars are the ones we see most for early 12V failure, because the alternator never gets a long enough run to fully recharge. The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, and pre-purchase battery checks can usually be fitted in at short notice.

FAQs

Common Questions

Everything you might want to know before booking.

How long does a hybrid battery last?

Most hybrid drive batteries last around eight to ten years or 150,000 to 200,000 km, but that varies a lot with use. Aqua and Prius cars doing hard city and ride-share kilometres often wear their packs faster, while a gently driven private car can run well past ten years. Heat and short trips are the biggest factors. A scan tells you the pack's real state of health.

How much does a hybrid battery replacement cost in NZ?

Across New Zealand, hybrid battery replacement typically costs between $1,500 for a Toyota Aqua and around $5,000 for a large Lexus, fitted, though the exact price depends on your vehicle, the pack and whether a new or refurbished battery is used. See the model section above for a breakdown. For an accurate quote for your vehicle, get in touch with our team on (07) 847 3339.

Do you replace Toyota Aqua hybrid batteries?

Yes. The Toyota Aqua is one of the most common hybrid battery replacements we see, because its pack does hard stop-start city kilometres, especially on ride-share cars. We scan the battery for cell balance and fault codes first, then fit a healthy pack and clear the codes. Across New Zealand an Aqua hybrid battery typically costs between $1,500 and $2,600 fitted. Call (07) 847 3339 for a quote.

Can I keep driving with a failing hybrid battery?

You often can for a short while, but it is not a good idea. A failing hybrid battery usually triggers a warning light, drops your fuel economy, and forces the petrol engine to work harder, and it can eventually leave the car unable to start or move. The safe move is to have it scanned early, before a partial fault becomes a car that will not go.

Is it better to recondition or replace a hybrid battery?

Reconditioning tries to revive an old pack by balancing or swapping weak modules, while replacement fits a fresh battery. Reconditioning can be cheaper up front but often has a shorter, less predictable life, especially on a high-mileage Aqua or Prius. We test the pack, show you its real state of health, and talk you through the options so you can weigh up cost against how long you plan to keep the car.

How long does a 12V car battery last in NZ?

Three to five years is typical on conventional lead-acid. AGM and EFB start-stop batteries can last longer if the charging system is healthy. Heat shortens life, and short trips that never let the alternator fully recharge the battery are the most common reason a 3-year-old battery fails early on Hamilton commute cars.

What are the signs my 12V car battery is failing?

Slow cranking on a cold morning, headlights dimming at idle, dash warning lights flicking on then off, electronic accessories resetting their settings, and repeated jump-starts. A short test on a calibrated analyser will tell you the state of health, cold-cranking amps and whether the alternator is charging properly.

Why does my battery keep going flat?

A battery that keeps going flat usually points at one of three things, a battery that has lost capacity, an alternator that is not charging properly, or a parasitic draw pulling current while the car is parked. We test all three so you are not buying a new battery into a fault that will flatten that one too.

What is a parasitic draw?

A parasitic draw is current being pulled from the battery while the car is switched off and locked. A small standby draw is normal, but a stuck relay, a faulty module, an aftermarket accessory or a glovebox light that never goes out can flatten a battery in days. We measure the draw and trace it circuit by circuit.

What is a start-stop battery and is it different?

Yes. Start-stop vehicles fit AGM (absorbed glass mat) or EFB (enhanced flooded battery) types built to handle the much higher cycle count of repeated engine restarts at traffic lights. Fitting a conventional battery to a start-stop car will fail quickly and may cause warning lights. Most start-stop vehicles also need the new battery registered to the BMS.

Do I need to register a new battery?

Many start-stop vehicles require the new battery to be registered to the battery management system so the charging strategy matches the new battery. Skip the registration and the alternator can over or undercharge the battery, shortening its life. We register the battery as part of the fitment where the vehicle needs it.

Can a bad alternator damage my battery?

Yes. An alternator charging too low never fully replenishes the battery, so it slowly discharges and sulfates. One charging too high cooks the battery and shortens its life. Both look like a battery problem from the driver's seat, which is why we test the alternator output and voltage every time.

My car cranks slowly, is it the battery or the starter?

It can be either. A weak battery and a tired starter motor both produce a slow, laboured crank. We test the battery state of health first, then run a starter draw test under load. That tells us whether the starter is pulling normal current or dragging the battery down itself.

Can you test the battery before I buy a used car?

Yes. A pre-purchase battery and charging-system check tells you whether the battery has life left, whether the alternator is charging correctly, and whether there is a parasitic draw. It is a quick, useful check that can flag a hidden cost before you sign.

What happens to my old battery?

Every old 12V battery is recycled through a licensed channel, never landfilled. Lead-acid batteries are fully recyclable and we handle the disposal as part of the job at no extra hassle to you.

Do you do auxiliary or dual-battery setups?

Yes. Utes, vans, campers and trade vehicles often run a second auxiliary battery for fridges, winches or tools. We check both batteries, the isolator or DC-DC charger linking them, and the wiring, and supply and fit replacement auxiliary batteries where needed.

Do you offer WINZ-approved quotes on battery work?

Yes. We are a WINZ-approved workshop and can provide formal written quotes for battery replacement and charging-system repairs that you can submit to Work and Income. Call (07) 847 3339 and we will put the quote together with you.
