Why Subaru owners come to us
Photos from the floor on Kahikatea Drive. Same team, same hoists, same standards every job.
- EJ25 head gasket failure The single most common Subaru issue on older 2.5 litre engines. We diagnose it properly with pressure and combustion-gas testing, then repair and rebuild with quality gaskets so it stays fixed.
- Boxer engine oil leaks Cam carrier seals, valve cover gaskets and the rear main seal are known leak points on Boxer engines. We trace the actual source rather than guessing, and replace seals with the correct parts.
- CVT shudder and hesitation A shudder or flat spot on a Forester or Outback usually means the Lineartronic CVT fluid is overdue. We carry out the correct fluid service to restore smooth, consistent drive.

-
AWD wind-up and binding
Tight, juddery turns often come from mismatched tyres or worn driveline parts loading up the AWD system. We check tyre sizing and the driveline and recommend the right fix, often a low-cost one.
-
Burning oil on Boxer engines
Some Boxer engines consume oil through worn rings or valve stem seals. We measure consumption, find the cause, and advise honestly on whether it is a top-up situation or a repair.
-
Suspension noise from stabiliser links
Clunking over bumps is usually worn stabiliser links and bushings. It is a quick, cost-effective fix we do regularly, and worth sorting before it affects a WOF.

More about Subaru servicing in Hamilton
Why Hamilton Subaru owners come to Turbo & Diesel
Subaru owners in Hamilton usually want one of two things: someone who genuinely understands the Boxer engine and Symmetrical AWD, or a straight answer about a head gasket before committing to a big bill. We do both.
The horizontally opposed engine, the AWD driveline and the Lineartronic CVT all behave differently to a conventional car, and we service them accordingly. When something is worn, we tell you straight. We will not quote a head gasket job until we have proven that is the fault.
Subaru servicing and repairs we handle
Boxer engine care:
- Correct oil specification for the horizontal layout, not a generic product: grade and quality matter more here than on a conventional engine
- Oil leaks traced to the actual source: cam carrier seals, valve cover gaskets and rear main seal
- EJ25 2.5 litre head gasket repairs: confirmed with cooling-system pressure testing and a combustion-gas test, then rebuilt with quality gaskets
AWD and drivetrain:
- Symmetrical AWD fluid services and inspection
- Wind-up or binding in tight turns: often mismatched tyres or worn driveline parts; we check both
- Lineartronic CVT: the correct transmission fluid service typically clears a shudder pulling away
WRX, STI and Impreza:
- Clutch and manual transmission work alongside everyday servicing
Across the range we also handle brakes, cooling systems, suspension work (including the common stabiliser-link clunk) and full diagnostic scanning.
What Subaru servicing costs
A standard service on an Impreza is a very different job from a head gasket rebuild on a high-mileage Outback. Key factors:
- Severity: a CVT fluid service is straightforward; a head gasket job involves stripping the engine and machining the heads
- Parts availability: common Subaru parts are well stocked in New Zealand
- Diagnostic time: a clear combustion-gas result is quick to act on; an intermittent AWD or electrical fault takes longer
We quote every job specifically once we have inspected the car. We are a WINZ-approved workshop if a major repair needs a formal quote. Call (07) 847 3339 or use the contact form.
Common Questions
Everything you might want to know before booking.
How much is a Subaru service NZ?
There is no flat figure. The cost depends on the model, the service interval due, whether it is a basic or major service, and anything the inspection turns up. A standard Impreza oil-and-filter service is a far smaller job than a head gasket repair on an Outback. We quote every Subaru specifically once we have seen it. Call (07) 847 3339 for a price.
Do Subarus need to be serviced every 6 months?
Most modern Subarus run a 12 month or 10,000 to 15,000 km interval, whichever comes first, and some older AWD models call for closer attention. Hard use, short trips or towing all shorten the interval. Check your logbook or ask us to confirm the right schedule for your exact model and how you drive.
Do my Subaru's head gaskets need replacing?
Older 2.5 litre EJ engines are known for head gasket failure. Signs include slow coolant or oil loss, white exhaust smoke, overheating, or a milky look under the oil cap. We pressure test the cooling system and run a combustion-gas test to confirm before quoting the repair, so you are not paying for guesswork.
Why does my Subaru CVT shudder?
A shudder pulling away or a flat spot under light load usually points to Lineartronic CVT fluid that is past its service life. In most cases a correct fluid service with the right Subaru fluid brings smooth drive back. If a scan shows something more, we will tell you straight rather than just selling a fluid change.
Do you offer WINZ-approved quotes?
Yes. We are a WINZ-approved workshop and can provide formal written quotes you can submit to Work and Income if a major repair, such as a head gasket job, is creating financial pressure. Call us and we will put the quote together with you.
Where are you based and what are your hours?
We are at 281 Kahikatea Drive, Frankton, Hamilton, open Monday to Friday 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, closed weekends. We are easy to reach from across Hamilton and welcome Subaru owners from throughout the Waikato.
